Domain Transfer – What You Need to Know
If you're looking to transfer your domain to Upperlink, here’s a simplified guide to help you understand what is required, what to expect, and how to complete the process.
Before You Start
Please ensure the following:
-
The domain is not within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer (ICANN requirement).
-
The domain is unlocked by the current registrar.
-
You have obtained the Transfer Authorization Code (TAC) or EPP code.
-
Your WHOIS email/contact information is up to date.
-
For .ng domains, ensure there are no active disputes or registry holds.
What is a TAC Code?
-
The TAC (Transfer Authorization Code) is a secure code used to approve a domain transfer.
-
It must be generated by the current registrar.
-
The code is valid for 14 days and should be used before it expires.
Transfer Process
-
Log in to your current registrar’s control panel.
-
Unlock your domain.
-
Request the TAC or EPP code.
-
-
Log in to your Upperlink account or create one.
-
Go to the Transfer Domain section.
-
Enter your domain name and the TAC/EPP code.
-
-
Submit the transfer request.
-
For most domains, you won’t need to confirm via email.
-
You may receive a notification from your current registrar, but this is just for information.
-
-
Wait for completion.
-
Transfers usually complete within 5 to 7 days for generic domains (e.g., .com, .org).
-
.ng domain transfers are generally processed faster by the registry once approved.
-
What Happens After the Transfer
-
Your domain will be renewed for 1 year (except .ng domains, which do not auto-renew on transfer).
-
Your DNS settings will remain unchanged unless you choose to update them.
-
There will be no downtime if the name servers remain the same.
When Transfers May Be Rejected
Transfers can be delayed or denied if:
-
The domain is locked.
-
The TAC is invalid or expired.
-
There are active disputes or holds.
-
The domain is within a 60-day lock period.
